What Is
Memory Care?

Receive nurturing support from your new caregiving family

Memory loss is, unfortunately, an inevitable part of ageing for some. Alzheimer’s and dementia can be difficult for everyone involved, causing you to feel a range of emotions or ask yourself questions like: What’s going to happen to my loved one’s health? But the more you know what to expect and how to prepare, the more it can make the journey feel less daunting.

Memory Care shows that you don’t have to go through this alone. If you need outside assistance or if you have a person with dementia or Alzheimer's disease in your household, memory care is the one to turn to. This is not a nursing home; instead, it's a caring environment built for your loved ones to receive all the mental, medical, physical, and social support that they need. This way, you don't have to worry about looking after them because our professional services and facilities are more than capable of providing the support that they deserve.

The difference between memory care and a nursing home

Memory care and nursing homes both share the same functions of providing 24-hour care, meals, supervision, and assistance. However, memory care is more focused on helping people who are dealing with memory loss or problems like Alzheimer's and dementia. In memory care, residents experience therapy and memory-enhancing activities on top of the around-the-clock care that they get from the staff. They provide activities like music therapy, art therapy, light therapy, sensory stimulation, and many more.

Safety is also a top priority in this centre. Memory care facilities have safety features implemented to prevent wandering residents from getting harmed or lost such as color-coded walls and enclosed gardens.

On the other hand, nursing homes provide both short-term and long-term care to seniors that need help with daily living activities, managing their health conditions and medication, as well as requiring continuous supervision. These are the people who can no longer look after themselves anymore and are in need of caregivers.

To put it simply, memory care is more on exercising all resources available to help residents deal with memory loss. Plus, they also encourage them to engage in social activities with their peers.

Is Memory Care Right For You?

4 signs that say it's time for Memory Care

How and when can you tell if your loved one needs to be brought into a memory care facility? We have laid out 5 factors to consider:

Changes in behaviour

Some people who are dealing with dementia may exhibit odd behaviour or start acting in a different way. They can become easily anxious and agitated. They can also become withdrawn or have total changes in their routine like forgetting hygiene and other stuff that they used to do normally.

Confusion and disorientation

Getting confused and disoriented is a natural part of memory loss. However, it can also increase their risk of getting into accidents or endangering themselves. Once you start to notice these symptoms being shown by a family member or seniors you know, it is time to bring them into our care.

Weakening of physical health

When someone is experiencing Alzheimer's disease or dementia, they can forget doing the important things such as eating, buying food, or taking their medication. This is why some of them become suddenly thin or frail. It affects their physique and overall health.

Deterioration or death of the caregiver

If a family member that is acting as the caregiver of someone and his/her health deteriorates or they die, this means that the person they're caring for needs a higher level of medical attention and care. It is important for them to be brought into a facility like ours where skilled caregiving can be given.

When is it time to move to a memory care in Singapore?

It's a little tricky to determine when it's the right time, considering that everyone is in different circumstances. Generally, assisted living is a good choice for seniors who require assistance with the daily tasks of life, like hygiene, dressing, or managing medication. Community life is also ideal for seniors who want to live in a place that provides social engagements with people in their same stage of life.

What care options are available?

Red Crowns offers both long-term and short-term skilled nursing care services for those with memory loss as well as coordination of hospice and other care services. If you're unsure of what type of care you need, you may our friendly consultant to assist you in finding the best accommodation and care option for you.

Independent living gives active seniors the benefits of residing at home without having to worry about home maintenance, housekeeping chores and cooking. Residents experience educational, cultural, spiritual, social and fitness opportunities through our programming.

Assisted living is most suitable for seniors who need help with everyday tasks such as dressing, bathing, eating meals, and taking medications. It also applies to those with specific care plans to address fall risk, poor nutrition or other individualized needs. These needs are diverse and may vary from one resident to another which is why each person has his or her own Individualized Service Plan (ISP) that details their care needs and preferences.

For those with Alzheimer's disease, dementia or other cognitive conditions, most of our communities offer a Reminiscence Neighborhood which provides a specialized, safe and secure care environment. Read more about our memory care programs.

We also offer short-term stays which help those with temporary care needs.

Do you have a medication management program?

Yes, Red Crowns has a medication management program, which may be added to an Individualized Service Plan (ISP) and varies based on regulation. Residents participating in Red Crowns' medication program may choose their own pharmacy or use Red Crowns' preferred pharmacy provider in that region. If a resident prefers to use a different pharmacy, the resident and pharmacy must comply with certain requirements. In some communities, residents may also be assessed to self-administer medications.

How is my level of care determined?

Upon move-in, our nurses and care staff will assess your current health and review your medical history to see how we can address your needs in the best way. They will also discuss your preferences as well as your normal routines to produce a care plan that’s tailor made for you. This Individualized Service Plan (ISP) details your care plan and is updated constantly to meet your evolving needs.

We also have a brief Care Questionnaire to help understand the different types of needed care.

How many times can we visit?

There is no limit when it comes to visits of family members. We want to allow our residents to spend significant amount of time with their family and loved ones which will also be good for their condition.

Do you offer 24-hour nursing?
